Stanchart: Fun, Laughter and Friends July 20, 2009

It has been an immensely enjoyable 2 and a half weeks working with all my temp colleagues at Standard Chartered Bank. Never expected myself to be able to enjoy going to work everyday, and still not feel tired at the end of it all. The manager in-charge, Carol, is a nice lady who doesn’t mind us taking breaks and chatting so long as we complete our work. I would say the environment, workload, and colleagues are the best in all the jobs I’ve worked so far.

What we do every morning is gather in our private sanctuary, which is basically a room, heavily guarded by paper boxes from the outside, that Melvin, Melvyn, Junquan and myself share to do our work. After a morning meeting conducted by our CEO Shawn Cheng, everyone would then return to their desks and start reading data from financial documents and type into our computers. Of course, a “meeting” is held every 30-60 mins to make sure everyone is not yet bored to death =D. We talk about everything under the sun, but emo stories and views on relationships has to take the cake. Remember the circle of trust yeah =D. Although our work lasted only 2 weeks+, I think our friendship will last a long long time. And this is to all my friends in SCB (in order of the excel name list):

Nicholas - Big guy who doesn’t talk much, but when he does speak, you know you can depend on it!
Xinzi - Fun and easy-going girl, which makes it easy to know her. I enjoyed getting to know you better during the last few days, keep eating ya! Haha
Yuwen - Genuine and simple girl, who is also v good in bowling! Perhaps I will update you on the happenings in the room in the future ok haha.
Jing Ting - Super nice and shy girl, she has a great voice and loves to sing K like me! Has a very cute personality and may be quiet in a large group but I enjoyed talking to you. Glad that I got to know you better in the last few days, keep in contact ya!
Jun Quan - If I had to choose a guy to tell a secret, it would be him! Humorous and genuine, you keep the atmosphere in the office full of fun and laughter.
Felicia - Fun-loving and bubbly girl, she is small but her charisma will get your attention immediately!
Shawn Cheng - Genuine and super funny guy to be around, you will be bowled over by his signature smile! All the best to your time in the army!
Nelson - Helpful and responsible guy who doesn’t forget to do his job while we might get carried away sometimes. Has both a serious and fun side to him, good luck to your biz ventures!
Jane - Quiet and reserved girl, one of the major contributors to our work. Nice and diligent, we might not have had time to have fun if not for her. Good luck in your job search!
Raymond - Super ‘on’ and organizes our group gatherings, but I suspect he has something going ‘on’ with JQ! Haha nice guy and thanks for educating me on investing. Wouldn’t have been so fun if not for the activities you organised.
Jun Kiat - Quiet and reserved guy, reminds me of another friend of mine. Although we didn’t talk much but been nice working with you.
Melvyn Toh - Probably knows all the secrets going on in the room, but keeps it with him. He has a weird sense about him that makes him quite funny actually. Keep taking nice pictures yeah!
Cai Yun - Hard working girl who didn’t just give up after she deleted a day’s worth of work accidentally. Know that you’re concerned with your studies, good luck with it!
Melvin Loh - Was surprised by how nice and helpful he is, a good friend to have around. Initiated the secrets-sharing by starting off with himself, and is a good listener as well. Has a Japanese/Korean-inspired style about him =D
Eunice - Very nice and cheerful girl who likes to talk. First person I talked to when I reached the office cause we were both early haha. Easy to talk to and dresses nicely like a model!
Erin - Chatty and loves fast food! Can see the gleam of excitement when she talks about Natalia. Thanks for enduring our spells of Channel 8 hehe.

I believe we will have a host of activities planned for this holiday period, credits to our planner Raymond, and Nelson for organising the paintball. Hope to see you guys/gals often, and when I’m back from the UK for my summer holidays we’ll catch up yeah!

after watching million dollar baby, gran torino and letters from iwo jima, i’ve got to say he’s a great director who can also act very well! he makes movies that really touches the heart, unlike alot of other movies nowadays that emphasize on 3D graphics, hype, and flashy stuff. and he acts in them, so well you wouldn’t believe he was the director as well.

my to-watch list:
changeling, flags of our fathers, mystic river, blood work

27 Sep 09, will be leaving for Exeter, UK to study. No more messing around and gaming anymore, not gonna risk NOT doing well.

Back to being a poor student and having to manage my own expenses and life, except that this time its all gonna be on my own! Kinda daunting but stepping out of the comfort zone should be a good thing I guess, at least you mature and have a different experience.

3 more months till ORD! Yet I still have a last outfield exercise to go to and take shit from my new CSM who knows nuts yet acts like he does. Some luck eh =\

By the way anyone who has job “lobangs” starting in June should let me know =D

Cheers

New bike and some updates September 30, 2008

Filed under: General — Shawn @ 8:51 am

Bought myself my first ever bike on sunday, at the bike shop below my house. Cost me $370 total including the misc stuff. Has front suspension and 7-speed shimano gears, quite light as well since its frame is made of aluminium. Majority of it was paid by my mum though, as a birthday present. Was quite surprised when she offered to pay. Thanks to joel as well for giving opinions on choosing the right one. This is the pic but it looks better cause mine is black and looks quite sleek.

On the other hand, also submitted applications to HKU and HKUST, gonna apply for CUHK when they open for application. They are the top 3 unis in Hong Kong, and hopefully one of them accepts me, ha. Not very confident though! *_*

my bike!

nufc

KEVIN Keegan believes that Newcastle United have captured a player of the “very highest calibre” after Fabricio Coloccini became the most expensive defender in the club’s history.

Coloccini, capped 27 times by Argentina, replaced Jonathan Woodgate as the Magpies’ record rearguard acquisition as he penned a five-year deal at St.James’ Park this week.

And, in an exclusive interview with nufc.co.uk, gaffer KK spoke of his delight after adding the former Deportivo La Coruna ace to his black-and-white ranks.

“I’m delighted that the deal is now done,” said the Toon chief.

JONAS Gutierrez has welcomed Argentina team-mate Fabricio Coloccini to Newcastle United and says that he is delighted to be playing alongside his compatriot week-in-week-out.

The pair have been La Liga opponents for the past three seasons with former Deportivo La Coruna defender Coloccini often charged with task of nullifying the attacking threat of Gutierrez and his Real Mallorca comrades.

But now, with both having penned five-year deals at St.James’ Park, winger Jonas admits he cannot wait to share a St.James’ Park dressing room with a player he rated among one of the best in the Spanish top flight.

“I know from playing against Fabricio in La Liga and as a team-mate for Argentina what a good player he is - I’m just happy we’re on the same side all of the time now!,” the 25-year-old told nufc.co.uk in an exclusive interview after Coloccini became the most expensive defender in United’s history.

7 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism January 6, 2008

Filed under: General — Shawn @ 8:14 pm

1. Eat Breakfast
You’ve heard it before: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Many people skip breakfast because they don’t have time or they don’t like traditional breakfast foods. But if you
wait until lunch to eat, your body assumes you’re fasting and responds by slowing your metabolism. If you’re pressed for time, try eating something quick like cereal, peanut butter on toast, or cottage cheese and fruit. And remember, if you eat breakfast, you have a greater chance of burning off calories (during a run, for instance!) since you’re consuming them early in the day.

2. Drink Green Tea
Green tea has been shown to boost metabolism. Researchers believe that antioxidants in green tea can cause the body to waste calories as heat, which increases your caloric burn.

3. Spice It Up
Adding hot peppers such as jalapenos to your meals can increase the amount of calories your body burns during digestion. If you like your food to have a little kick, it’s an easy way rev up your metabolism.

4. Build Lean Body Mass
The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn, even while resting. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, so it’s important to work at building it. Even doing resistance or weight training just twice a week can make a big difference. And, ladies, don’t worry — regular strength training will make you look toned, not bulked-up.

5. Don’t Skip Meals
Our bodies have a built-in survival mechanism to conserve calories when we go for a long period of time without eating. So, when you skip meals, your body slows your metabolism to prevent you from starving. To prevent this, try to eat five to six small meals each day, or three meals and some healthy snacks in between.

6. Eat Protein With Every Meal
Our bodies have to work hard to digest the foods we eat, and your metabolism revs up in response. However, eating protein boosts your metabolism a little more than consuming carbohydrates or fats with the same number of calories. Of course, don’t take that to mean that you should switch to a high-protein diet, since carbs are the main source of energy for runners. But try to incorporate lean protein into most meals. Your best sources for protein include: fish, lean red meat, skinless chicken or turkey breast, nonfat yogurt, skim milk, eggs and egg substitutes, beans, tofu, and lentils.

7. Stay Active Every Day
Try to keep moving as much as possible during the day. If you have a desk job, do leg lifts as you sit at your desk or take frequent breaks to walk around.
